Social Media and Privacy

The recent discussion going on in class about social media has brought a few things to my attention.

1.) Everything is public - No matter how private you have set your account, the information can make itself public and there will always be a record of your post.

2.) Social media content can be detrimental to your career - Several people have been fired due to their facebook and twitter posts. Refer to 1.)

3.) Copyrighted material is under fire on social media sites - Viacom recently put up (and lost) a lawsuit against YouTube for copyright violations. While this currently is against the hosting site, its only a matter of time before they attack the uploading user. While I'm not saying people should break copyright laws, playing a 15 sec audio clip on a family video is far from using a song on a commercial.

Social media has opened up a whole can of worms, and its only gonna get worse. We are now constantly having to second guess what we say, where we say it, and where we record it to.

  1. Well that's is what we have to do: watch what we say or post on the internet. I agree that eventually all info posted on the web will be public, but people should know better about what to post and shouldn't add certain friends on social networking sites unless it is mandatory.

  2. Key point! EVERYTHING is public now! Anything that you post online, you should be willing to share with everyone that you can think of.

  3. I cannot agree more about being aware of what you say on the interned because when there's a will there's a way. So do monitor how you word your post. Second I know facebook does not have the best privacy so try your best; try talking to someone by messaging rather than wall post. If we are going to complain try complaining to the host of the networking sites to come up with better privacy for our security

  4. No doubt! As I have been saying for a while now, privacy is gone! There are all types of mediums for posting and recording (audio or video, analog or digital). It can all trace back to you. Whether it be online or in public, be careful of what you say or do now more than ever. So yes, always consider the plethora of people relative or distant in the real world and virtual world.
